HARBOURS

Harbours from Chichester to the Solent

The Romans landed here, international trade to the continent started here, smugglers profited here (and some were hanged for it) and fishermen harvested herring and oysters.  But fast forward to 21st Century and the once deepwater harbours are much silted. Pleasure boating and competitive yacht racing jostle for space with recreational fishing while birders tramp along with binoculars, children splash on sandy beaches.

Each harbour is unique, framed by its industrial, residential or agricultural environment.  No two are the same and each has its charm.  I love these places of peace and purpose, and especially the interface between the water and land, and the tide which washes a new picture into view every twelve hours.
